• Number of annual abortions in Florida in 2011 (DOH) – 77,002

• Number of (known) active abortionists on www.Forerunner.com/fyi/fyi.html – 46

Number of licensed abortion clinics – 66 (AHCA lists 68, but two mills are listed at one address in Orlando. In Pensacola, one abortion mill merged with another when that mill was forced to close.)

• Number of abortionists who will pass retirement age in 2013 – 15 of 46 (32.6%)

• Average age of abortionists in Florida – DOB 1951 or 62-years-old.

• Florida does 7.25 percent of the 1.2 million abortions in the United States.

• Florida also has approximately 10 percent of the surgical abortion clinics in America (66 out of about 660).

What is an “abortion clinic”?

The Alan Guttmacher Institute’s definition of an “abortion provider” leads to numbers that seem askew. They list 1,793 “abortion providers” in the United States. This does not give us an accurate picture for the following reasons.

First, the number of abortion providers includes the addition of 65 hospital-based abortion providers in California that were only recently discovered to be performing abortions. Collectively, these providers performed only 470 abortions in 2008, an average of 7 abortions per facility. It is likely that these facilities only offer abortion services when the pregnancy is compromised because of the health of the pregnant woman or fetus (blog.ansirh.org/2011/01/abortion-access-united-states).

Further, the National Abortion Federation reports that most abortions in the USA are provided in freestanding clinics. In 2005, only 5% occurred in hospitals, down from 22% in 1980, and only 2% took place in physician’s offices (NAF). So we can safely say that well over 90 percent of the abortions in the state of Florida occur within the walls of a licensed abortion clinic.

For our purposes, I will deal with licensed abortion clinics only. I will use the rounded number approximately 77,000 abortions per year done by the 66 licensed abortion mills in the state of Florida.

Florida’s Abortion Industry Income

The average cost of a first trimester abortion in Florida is between $350 and $450. The price increases by about $50-$100 per week past the first 12 weeks. After 24 weeks, the procedure is much more difficult and dangerous. It can easily cost more than $1,100. I will use the figure of $450 as a rough estimate.

• Each abortion clinic does an average of 1166 abortions per year.

• At an average cost of about $450 per abortion the gross annual income for each mill is $525,000 for abortions.

• Each abortion clinic does on average 22.4 abortions per week.

• At an average cost of $450 per abortion the weekly income for each mill is $9943.

• Each abortionist does on average 1674 abortions per year; about 32 per week.

• Assuming a 5-day work week, this is about 6 per day for each abortionist and 4.4 per day for each mill. Therefore, most mills are open no more than 2 or 3 days per week for abortions.

This creates the need for “circuit rider” abortionists who moves from place to place throughout the week, sometimes killing at two mills per day.

The weakest link here is the abortionist, not the mill owner and not the number of abortion-minded women reached through sidewalk counseling and street preaching. It should be stressed that these too are vitally important and part of the overall equation for reducing abortion and finally closing abortion mills. But it is important to understand that the average abortion mill easily gets by with a gross income of a little less than $10,000 per week from abortion services. Without a licensed surgeon, however, an abortion mill cannot legally stay open for business.

The Effect of Awareness Campaigns

We have to consider what it does to the abortion industry in our state when one abortionist quits, dies or retires. Over a recent period, we saw several abortionists quit, retire, die or move out of state. These included Vera Stefanac, James Gengelbach, Scott Hye, Walker Whaley and possibly one more. That was approximately ten percent of Florida’s full-time abortionists. The local mills have begun to recruit new doctors from out-of-state.

We also have to look at the effect of the phenomenon of the “circuit rider” abortionist. While one abortionist can do 20 to 30 abortions per day for five days a week covering four or five mills, the number of doctors willing to travel to several different abortion clinics over a several hour of travel time each day is dwindling. Couple this with the fact that several of the circuit riders we know locally are aging and that there are only about 46 abortionists for the 66 abortion mills – or .7 killers per mill – and we see a significant effect on a dwindling number of killers.

In light of the “circuit rider” phenomenon, we can see three types of abortionists:

  1. The abortionist who is part-time, but also works at another “legitimate” practice.
  2. The abortionist who monopolizes all the business at just one or two mills.
  3. The circuit rider who covers several mills.

Part of the Awareness Campaign strategy is to determine who the circuit riders are. Obviously, if one of these quits, retires, dies or moves out of state, then that has a huge impact. If four are lost in one year (as happened recently in central Florida) then that is at least ten percent of the active killers in the Florida abortion industry. Then other abortionists need to be recruited or the existing cadre of killers needs to pick up the slack.

With a little bit of extrapolation and educated guesswork, we may be able tell who is doing how many abortions at which mills. We have the statistics per county, so it should be possible to get a rough idea. From there we can begin to try to figure out the schedules of the “circuit riders” — or at least most of them.

The most likely reason the average age of a abortionist in Florida is 62 years of age is monetary and no longer having ambition to provide quality care. They probably do not need to obtain CEU’s to maintain specialty certifications. Getting old and lazy, but still want to make an easy buck.
