Grandma should be charged with FACE

By Meredith Raney in a letter to FLORIDA TODAY

Dear FLORIDA TODAY,

The headline on your 8/3/00 State page screams, “Gun-toting mother demands clinic give daughter abortion” This mother (and grandmother to the unborn child) was rightly charged under felony state charges for trying to force her daughter to have an abortion.

But where is Janet Reno and the feds? This woman should also be charged under the federal law, Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances (FACE) law. If the headline had read, “Gun-toting mother demands clinic NOT give daughter abortion,” you can bet that federal marshals would have been all over the place.

The clinic where this happened is the very same clinic where two pro-lifers, Eric Olson and Ray Unterburger peacefully laid their bodies in front of the doors to prevent the killing of unborn babies in March of 1995. They were convicted of FACE and spent 4 months in federal prison and they didn’t even have a gun, or even threaten anyone.

Come on, Janet Reno, let’s apply the FACE law equally.
