¿Jesucristo, Un Carpintero Mediocre?

Luego de dos meses de lucha, 500,000 personas murieron (la mayoría a machetazos) en Ruanda a consecuencia de disputas tribales. Algunos sacerdotes fueron enterrados vivos, mientras que otros simplemente fueron echados a hoyos infestados de termitas para ser devorados. Varias iglesias fueron saqueadas y destruidas. ?Los autores? La mitad de ellos personas que previamente habían sido consideradas “buenos cristianos”. Cincuenta por ciento de la población de Ruanda la constituyen cristianos bautizados. Comentando este hecho, un líder cristiano en Ruanda decía: “Después de 94 años de evangelización, estos asesinatos prueban nuestra derrota. Los ‘cristianos’ vandalizaron las iglesias. La gente nunca asimiló los valores cristianos. Debemos empezar otra vez, en otra forma. Nosotros practicamos una evangelización de masas ineficiente. Muchos se convierten, pero hay muy poco cambio en sus vidas” (La Voz de los Mártires, Ag.94).
Por otra parte, en una nación supuestamente cristiana, como Estados Unidos, en donde se dice que existen por lo menos 50 millones de cristianos comprometidos, el aborto es legal desde hace 20 años y ya ha cobrado la vida de 50 millones de niños no nacidos. Además, se promueve el homosexualismo y ahora se impulsa la legalización de la eutanasia.
En Latinoamérica, el crecimiento de la iglesia evangélica es explosivo e impresionante. Pero mucha gente todavía se pregunta si esto redundará en cambios sustanciales de los sistemas autoritarios prevalentes en todos los niveles, si afectará las estructuras de corrupción y explotación, en definitiva, si contribuirá a un mayor desarrollo económico y social. En una denuncia valiente y profunda, Caio Fabio, presidente de la Asociación de Evangélicos de Brasil, se pregunta si lo que ocurre en Latinoamérica será un avivamiento “a la manera de Dios” o si no será un “avivamiento a la latinoamericana” que “muera en la ilusión de una alegría evangélica superficial e inoperante”. Fabio concluye que de ser así, “podemos simplemente llegar a ser mayoría dentro de un país de inmorales, de miserables, sin que nada cambie sustancialmente a nuestro continente”, (El Verdadero Avivamiento, 1993).
Todo esto nos lleva a reflexionar sobre nuestra comprensión de lo que es el evangelio y la forma en que lo estamos proclamando o predicando de acuerdo al mandamiento en Marcos 16:15. Asimismo, meditemos también sobre el profundo significado del mandamiento de discipular a las naciones (Mateo 28:19).
En una sugestiva frase, Francisco de Asis nos decía “predica el evangelio todo el tiempo, si es necesario utiliza las palabras”. Es decir, las palabras no siempre son necesarias, sobre todo si con nuestra vida demostramos que somos cristianos. Por otra parte, Martín Lutero señalaba: “la mujer que barre su cocina esté haciendo la voluntad de Dios en la misma medida que el monje que ora, no porque ella pudiera cantar un himno cristiano mientras barre sino porque a Dios le complacen los pisos limpios. El zapatero cristiano realiza sus deberes cristianos no al poner pequeñas cruces en todos los zapatos, sino al confeccionar buenos zapatos, porque Dios está interesado en la excelencia de nuestra profesión”.
Pero volvamos al título de este artículo. ¿Cree usted que Jesucristo en su afán de leer las escrituras, o de prepararse para su ministerio, o de orar, no daba importancia a su trabajo de carpintero, o lo subestimaba, y por tanto sus mesas eran cojas, sus muebles llenos de astillas y en general que su carpintería era mediocre?
¿Cree usted que Jesucristo nos enseñó a ser cristianos de palabras, a “predicar” de boca para afuera un evangelio memorizado pero poco vivido, a considerar que mientras asistamos a la iglesia, prediquemos, oremos y leamos nuestra Biblia, no importa si somos estudiantes mediocres, si seguimos siendo incumplidos, deshonestos, irresponsables e ineficientes para dar una vida digna a nuestra familia y sociedad?
¿De dónde salió ese evangelio unidimensional, totalmente preocupado con el más allá, con una vida de extremo pietismo y contemplación, que como ya hemos visto degenera fácilmente en pasividad, mediocridad, y sin autoría (como en Ruanda) por la menor complicidad con las peores injusticias, las peores matanzas, y la pobreza más extrema?
Está bien que se evangelice, que se predique y se proclame con palabras el evangelio de nuestro Señor Jesucristo. Pero si esto no está acompañado de un verdadero cambio en nuestra vida, de una transformación radical de nuestras acciones, de nuestros pensamientos y objetivos, de la búsqueda del carácter cristiano en nuestras vidas, entonces no seremos más que oidores, pero no hacedores de la palabra. Ejércitos de millones de cristianos en Estados Unidos, en Brasil, en México y si no millones por lo menos cientos de miles en otros países. Soldados inmortales, con un comandante en jefe en la persona del propio Señor Jesucristo.
¿No podrán ellos transformar profundamente nuestros países, canalizar la abundante gracia y bendiciones recibidas de Dios hacia todos los demás, brillar, prosperar y dar ejemplo a toda la sociedad para lograr países justos, prósperos y libres?
Recuerdo el momento de mi conversión a Jesucristo, hace ya ocho años. Recuerdo que nadie me “predicó” con palabras, ni me mostró ningún folleto evangelístico. Lo que recuerdo es que estando yo en una tierra extraña, conocí a unas personas que me invitaron a su casa, se mostraron tal como eran, me extendieron su amistad y su amor. Fui yo el que tuvo que preguntarles, e insistir para saber de dónde tenían ese amor el uno por el otro, de dónde provenía ese gozo y paz interior que me faltaba. Así fue como me enteré que eran cristianos y por supuesto yo también quise serlo.
Consagrémonos a una vida cristiana total e integral y que nuestra santificación no sólo resulte en un mejoramiento individual o familiar, sino tambíen en el surgimiento de un mundo mejor que merezca ser llamado herencia para nuestros hijos.
