Woman's clinic moves to north of Cocoa, 8/23/2000

COCOA, Fla. – The only women’s health center that provides abortions in Brevard County has relocated from Suntree Plaza.
Employees of WomanCare of Melbourne spent Tuesday moving equipment and office furniture in the rain to a new two-story office building at 412 High Point Drive, just north of the Beeline off U.S. 1 in an unincorporated area north of Cocoa.
It’s the second move for the clinic in two years, since Orlando clinic owner Tammy Sobieski bought the Aware Woman Center for Choice from Patricia Baird-Windle, who retired from the provider business to write about the abortion rights movement.
Baird-Windle ran the clinic for more than 20 years, was a target of the national right-to-life movement and filed a lawsuit that helped establish areas around clinics that barred abortion protesters.
Baird-Windle sold her clinic on U.S. 1 to the Department of Transportation for a road-widening project. Sobieski moved to Suntree Plaza last year when the old clinic was sold to the Department of Transportation for a road-widening project. She had to find a new place this year because Suntree Plaza’s landlords refused to renew the clinic’s lease.
Sobieski said the new office building, which is being leased, is bigger and cheaper.
