Una "nueva gama" de atletas esta atrayendo la atención de América

En los últimos años, los atletas cristianos han sido destacados por la prensa de los Estados Unidos con creciente frecuencia.
- ABC Televisión recientemente presentó un reportaje especial con el atleta cristiano de las Águilas de Filadelfia “punta defensiva,” Reggie White.
- La revista “M” tuvo una historia de primera página sobre Hershiser, Butler, Strawberry y Carter de los Dogers de Los Ángeles, llamándolos “las estrellas de Dios.”
De pronto la prensa americana parecía estar interesada en la vida espiritual de algunas de las más reconocidas superestrellas del deporte. Algunos periodistas han levantado críticas y otros han preguntado: “¿Es el campo de juego el lugar para predicar el evangelio?”
A pesar de esto, la cristiandad evangélica, se ha convertido en una fuerza dominante en el mundo del deporte: béisbol, jockey, fútbol, y baloncesto, cada uno tiene su propio Ministerio dedicado a evangelizar a los jugadores y colaborar en las necesidades espirituales de los mismos en cada equipo.
Durante los últimos seis años el Ministerio Internacional de Atletas ha patrocinado una conferencia de Oración y Alabanza en Phoenix, Arizona. Según el director ejecutivo Larry Keryckuk, “más de 2.700 atletas y miembros de familia han sido tocados por este Ministerio.”
La conferencia de Phoenix 91 contó con famosísimas personalidades del deporte como Rosey Grier, Ernie Shavers y Meadowlark Lemon, tanto como Mickey Singletary de los Osos de Chicago, Christian Okoye de KC Chiefs, A. C. Green de los Lakers de Los Angeles y Reggie White de los Eagles de Filadelfia.
Greg Ball, director nacional de “Campeones para Cristo de los Estados Unidos,” era antes un Kickboxer de Karate de contacto completo. Ahora es ministro de algunas de las mas famosas personalidades del deporte en el país. Según Ball, “hace siete años había tantos atletas en los campos universitarios dándoles sus vidas al Señor que vimos la necesidad de que estos hombres fueran discipulos, entrenadores y se les diera el mensaje real del reino de Dios. Muchos de ellos son hoy día predicadores.”
Ball cuenta la historia de cómo él y algunos otros evangelistas de los campos universitarios guiaron a A.C. Green hacia el Señor mientras este era un estudiante en el estado de Oregón. “A.C. fue alcanzado en el nivel universitario. Fue discipulado como parte de una iglesia local. Cuando se fue a la NBA a jugar para los Lakers, había otra iglesia en Los Angeles que estaba conectada con la iglesia en el estado de Oregón. Fue un gran ajuste el que tuvo que hacer, pero a causa de la iglesia pudo seguir creciendo.”
El deporte profesional ha producido predicadores agresivos parcialmente a causa de la similaridad de las disciplinas que se requieren en entrenar el cuerpo de un atleta y el tipo de entrenamiento espiritual necesario para ser un verdadero testigo para cristo. En el pasado, beisbolistas tales como Billy Sunday y Tony Kubek expresaron abiertamente su fe. Sin embargo fueron ridiculizados y llamados “oportunistas” por la prensa.
Hoy día, a causa de la introducción de un liderazgo más maduro, provisto por Ministerios tales como Athletes International, los jugadores cristianos han recibido más respeto por parte de los medios de comunicación.
A pesar de que son más aceptados, los atletas cristianos más francos siguen siendo criticados por sus predicaciones públicas y sus muestras de fe en el campo. Algunos están solamente dejando que su carácter, sus logros y su vigor prediquen por ellos. Fuera del campo están dejando su que estilo de vida y carácter sea un testigo de Cristo.
Según el lanzador estrella de los Dogers de Los Ángeles, Orel Hershiser: “yo no predico. Tengo que jugar en este equipo, con estos compañeros, así que no lo hago. Pero dejo que mis lanzamientos sean un ejemplo y una influencia por Jesucristo.”
Algunas superestrellas cristianas han sido siempre criticadas por su agresivo estilo de juego, siendo vistos como una contradicción de la dócil obediencia enseñada por Jesucristo. Reggie White, de los Eagles de Filadelfia afirma: “mucha gente mira lo que yo hago y dice: ese no es cristiano. La gente piensa que ser cristiano significa que tienes que ser un debilucho. Creo que los cristianos deben ser los atletas más rudos del mundo. Que debemos ir con todo, todo el tiempo.”
A.C. Green de los Lakers y los Pheonix Suns repite este pensamiento: “Dios quiere que su gente sea guerrera; que fueran luchadores. No quiero decir amenazando con guerra o peleando … sino entregándose a una lucha para ganar el rebote y anotar puntos. Es ese espíritu de poder el que me mueve. Yo no empiezo nada, pero no le huyo a nada tampoco.”
Pero ya sea que sean criticados por predicar o por su estilo de juego agresivo, estos hombres y mujeres viven fieles en simple obediencia a la Palabra de Cristo: “Vayan por todo el mundo y anuncien a todos este mensaje de salvación” (Marcos 16:15).
