TORONTO, Canada (EP) – The Canadian Catholic Conference of Bishops added its voice to the many who continue to protest, lobby, and fight the recent Canadian Supreme Court ruling legalizing abortion-on-demand.
In an official statement March 17, the conference said it will accept nothing less than total protection of the unborn, concurring with other pro-life organizations in an effort to influence Canadian members of Parliament to “bring in a law reflecting pro-life views,” said Laura McArthur, president of the Canadian Right to Life movement (which is not affiliated with the U.S. movement of the same name). McArthur said she believes that pressure brought upon Parliament by a number of groups “is paying off and the possibility of passing a pro-life law is“very, very, very strong.”
Those who have never actively expressed their pro-life views are doing so now, says McArthur. “The middle-ground people are moving,” she says. “Everything is coming to a head and it’s overwhelmingly pro-life.”
Canada’s Supreme Court ruled 5-2 to strike down the nation’s laws restricting abortion early in February of this year, an action that many called “a mirror decision” of the U.S. Supreme Court’s decision in the Roe vs. Wade case in l973 which made abortion-on-demand a legal right of women in the U.S. The Canada decision ignited protests across Canada. McArthur vowed at that time to “defend [the unborn] as long as I have breath.”
Government sources say that a law may be passed soon, said McArthur.
