La iglesia continua a pesar de dificultades y persecución
HABANA (FRI) – Mientras miro por la ventana de mi destartalado cuarto, en el piso doce, con vista a la ciudad de la Habana, Cuba, pienso en el pasado viaje que fue excitoso y emocionante. He tenido el privilegio de no sólo predicar en varias iglesias no registradas (no gubernamentales), sino también de alentar pastores en cultos privados.
Estos hombres y mujeres son los héroes de hoy. Han enfrentado persecución, pobreza, sacrificio, terror y siguen viviendo en el. Estos hermanos y hermanas a veces pasan hambre por causa de la crísis económica. Esto es particularmente triste cuando pensamos que sólo viven a noventa millas de los Estados Unidos.
A pesar de las increibles dificultades, ha habido una explosión del renacimiento y una increible difusión del Espíritu Santo en ésta isla. La mayoría de las iglesias están repletas de multitudes de pie, mientras en los 60s y 70s muchas iglesias fueron cerradas, hoy filas de gente salen por la puerta de enfrente. Recientemente muchas congregaciones se han multiplicado, e incluso triplicado en participación.
Quizá lo más emocionante es el hecho que el 70% de los miembros de la iglesia estén por debajo de los 30 años de edad. Existe una hambre espiritual entre la juventud cubana, como nunca antes. Sin embargo, a causa de su crecimiento, el gobierno ha empezado a oponerse a las iglesias locales viendo al cristianismo como una amenaza para su futura existencia.
En mi primer viaje a Cuba en 1993, había mas apertura hacia las iglesias por parte del gobierno. Ahora , hay un crecimiento en la sospecha, el miedo y la preocupación de que ésta revolución cristiana se les esté saliendo de las manos. Restricciones y persecución a ministros se ha convertido en algo común, algunas iglesias han sido cerradas por el gobierno. A pesar de la buena imagen de relaciones públicas internacionales creada recientemente por el liderazgo del país. En el fondo hay una gran preocupación de que la alianza con el comunismo se esté tambaleando.
Otro método que ha sido utilizado en contra del crecimiento fenomenal de la iglesia es la promoción de una religión sustituta en Cuba: la brujería. El gobierno declaró abiertamente que la Brujería/Santería es la “religión cultural oficial” de la isla. En cualquier tienda del gobierno se puede encontrar una sección entera dedicada a la venta de artificios, vestidos e instrumentos para la práctica de este sustituto espiritual demoníaco. Más que eso Cuba ha patrocinado conferencias internacionales y talleres en la introducción de la Santería.
El misionero Hudson Taylor dijo: “La gran comisión no es una opción para considerar, es un mandato para obedecer!” El sonido de la trompeta es claro. Además de enviar grupos evangelistas de “Campeones para Cristo” a Costa Rica, Honduras, Panamá, Colombia, Perú y Nicaragua, seguiremos este año con más ofensiva en Cuba.
