He who sits in the heavens laughs.
~ Psalm 2:4
This describes God’s perspective on the futile plots and rebellions of nations and earthly rulers against His authority.
“God’s laughter, in this context, is not a joyful sound, but a manifestation of his scorn and derision towards their actions. It underscores his ultimate power and control over all things, highlighting the futility of human attempts to oppose His will.”

Christians ought to support the victims of war with prayer and material humanitarian relief. I am certainly supportive of Christians who are on the ground in Ukraine and supporting the innocent victims of war. These brave Christian humanitarians are understandably swayed toward a certain pro-Western narrative and want to believe we are on the side of good in supporting Ukraine while Russia is purely evil.
(I myself have been to Ukraine 10 times and Russia 10 times in the 1990s and 2000s. I put tens of thousands of dollars into Christian media to preach the Gospel in all the former USSR.)
I want to caution that we in America often believe a narrative and not reality. Then we look for data to support the narrative. The narrative is that the US is on the side of good and is predestined to defeat all evil in the world. The data often sadly comes after the US military industry and Congress have provoked a war somewhere in the eastern hemisphere of the world far away from where Americans can get accurate information. Then we see the responsive side as part of an “axis of evil” arrayed against us because “they hate us because they hate our freedom.”
Maybe. Maybe not. History will tell the truth in the end.
The reality of the Ukraine conflict is that there was never a Western plan to defeat Russia directly with Western military force, since a direct challenge to a nuclear power would be taken as an existential threat. The plan was alway to use a smaller former Soviet bloc country to engage in a protracted war while we weakened Russia through sanctions. Then bring regime change. Make sure a pro-Western president we can control is in power. Russia can never be an equal, just a client state. President Biden believed he accomplished that and was crowing about it in 2022. He defeated evil Putin. This man cannot remain in power! Biden exclaimed as he uttered the big lie and simultaneously blasphemed God.
A moment later, many people thought this applied only to Biden. Notice which candidates won their respective 2024 elections.
The plan to weaken Russia and BRICS backfired in a big way throughout the West. Of all the European presidents who supported Biden’s Ukraine project only a weakened Macron is still in power and a seemingly “pro-Russian” bloc quickly formed between Romania, Slovakia, Serbia, Hungary, and Austria. Poland and Italy are waiting in the wings. Out of economic reality and a need for cheap energy, Germany may follow Italy. In reality, these leaders are pro-nationalist— wanting peace and prosperity for their own nations — wanting free trade with Russia — and not at all interested in taking a side. The globalists still in power in the EU will next try to do everything to outlaw all nationalist parties, but they will only drop their mask to show they are in reality the anti-democracy force. The globalists will always oppose the populist urge.
By May 2022, the collective West had lost the Russia sanctions ploy and had turned to arming Ukraine in hopes that eventually they could isolate Russia into a stalemate in which they would gradually lose the support of their major BRICS partners. The opposite happened. China moved closer to Russia. Now the US is supporting Pakistan against India (another war we provoked through our numerous covert military and CIA bases in Pakistan). Then the BRICS forum went from five members to ten with dozens more looking to join. Most of the world wants a global economic system of cooperation, not a system in which a single nation can weaponize the reserve currency and banking system.
God obviously had another plan for the world order. The Ukraine war was lost for the collective West in 2022. Right now, the Western leaders are still coping with “The Five Stages of Loss.”1 Biden was always in the denial stage. Many EU leaders are now in the anger stage. Trump began in office in 2025 with the bargaining stage. He is still trying to bargain with the loss as though he can still turn it into a win. He will soon pass into sadness and then acceptance.
In the meantime, our leaders will pretend they “won” wars (including hybrid wars) the rest of the world sees we already lost (against Gaza, Yemen, India, Iran, China, etc.)
It is both tragic and comical.
This loss does not mean that a certain country or bloc of countries will “win” and a certain bloc of countries will “lose” — although countries who win wars usually get stronger.
In the end, the nations who best keep God’s covenant and wisely use the talents they have been given will be rewarded. Those who break God’s covenant will fail. God does not root for a side, but looks for those who are on the Lord’s side.
1 The five stages of grief or “loss,” as identified by Elisabeth Kübler-Ross, are denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. These stages are not necessarily experienced in a linear order, and individuals may cycle through them or linger in certain stages for varying periods.
Denial: This initial stage involves disbelief and a refusal to accept the loss. It can involve a temporary numbing or a rejection of the reality of the situation.
Anger: As the reality of the loss sets in, individuals may experience anger towards themselves, others, or even the situation itself. This can manifest as irritability or frustration.
Bargaining: In this stage, individuals may try to negotiate with a higher power or try to find a way to undo the loss or prevent it from happening again.
Depression: This stage is characterized by intense sadness, feelings of helplessness, and a lack of enthusiasm. It’s a natural response to the loss and should not be mistaken for a mental illness.
Acceptance: This doesn’t mean that the loss is forgotten or that feelings of sadness are gone; it means that individuals have come to terms with the reality of the loss are able to move forward.
It’s important to remember that these stages are a general guideline and not everyone experiences them in the same way or at the same pace. The experience of grief is unique to each individual, and it’s important to allow oneself to grieve and process the loss in their own time.
